2023 Summer Rewind Time!
Urban Health Program Summer Outreach
Let’s talk about all of the amazing events that the UHP was able to host this summer! Led by the wonderful Assistant Director for the Urban Health Program, Charese Jackson (pictured at one of our summer outreach events to the right), we were able to host students from all over the city of Chicago and surrounding areas. These students had a chance to come to the college of nursing and tour the SIM lab, sit-in on and participate in mock-SIM, and speak with nursing faculty and current students about all things healthcare related.
Wednesday, June 21st 2023 CHAMPIONS program Nurse for a Day: UHP hosted students from The CHAMPIONS NETWork
(Community Health And eMPowerment through Integration Of Neighborhood-specific Strategies using a Novel Education & Technology-leveraged Workforce), an innovative, community-based program that advances health equity by using the untapped resource of high school students from under-served communities
Thursday, June 22nd 2023 Thornton Township Nurse for a Day: UHP hosted 26 students from the junior and senior level within Thornton Township High School District 205 Medical/PrePharmacy program. The program is designed to expose them to any medically based opportunities and experiences.
Friday, July 7, 2023 UIC President's Award Program (PAP) Co-Clinic: UHP hosted approximately 40 UIC Freshmen starting this coming Fall. The Co-Clinic collaborates with the health science colleges to provide tours and networking with the health science students; while the Co-STEM provides the same with students dedicated to STEM fields. The President’s Award Program was created in 1985 to recognize and award students graduating from Illinois high schools who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and who represent the rich diversity of the State of Illinois. Only newly admitted first-year students will be considered.
Friday, July 7th The Latino Health Science Enrichment Program (LaHSEP):
UHP hosted a total of 16 LaHSEP students. The Latino Health Science Enrichment Program 3 (LaHSEP 3) is a six-week summer academic enrichment program for incoming first-year undergraduate students. The program provides participants the opportunity to prepare for college by taking Math, English, Chemistry, and engaging in research. Additionally, LaHSEP allows participants to learn about the student resources at UIC, resulting in a smoother transition to college.
Friday, July 14th Project REACH
UHP hosted 8 students from The Project Reach Summer Program, which is designed to provide rising UIC sophomores with information, resources, and tours of campus spaces.
Friday, July 14th Early Outreach summer Program (EOP)
UHP hosted about 30 fifth and sixth graders from the EOP, which was established in 1979 as the pre-college, academic pipeline program to the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Urban Health Program. The EOP provides a health-focused, supplemental learning experience to K–12 students.
A special thanks to all students, faculty, and staff who were able to help host these excited potential future healthcare professionals, including: Dr. Katherine Vanderzwan (pictured above), Myralyn Ortiz, Sean Boettcher, Dr. Rosalba Hernandez, and current students Lizet and Aliyah!
Seminars for Excellence in Nursing Sciences (SENS) Summer Program
The Seminars for Excellence in Nursing Science (SENS) program provided educational services to approximately 50 diverse incoming UIC nursing scholars seeking to gain useful knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this transitionary period. Participants were included from all programs including: pre-licensure BSN, pre-licensure MSN, post-licensure MSN, Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP), and nursing Ph.D. students. The SENS program spanned six weeks and gave students the opportunity to learn from courses such as: Strategies for Improving Success, Advanced Study Skills, Pathophysiology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Clinical Skills, Epidemiology, Statistics, and Philosophy of Science.
