“This was an important event because I was able to meet nurses and administrators from the Black Nurses Association, Cook County Health, Edward-Elmhurst Hospital, and Lurie Children's Hospital. As a scholarship recipient, I was given the opportunity to share my story for all attendees to hear.
I received a free ticket to the event in exchange for some volunteer work selling raffle tickets. This is a great opportunity to engage with people throughout the event. The night was fabulous, with everyone wearing red! Attendees received goody bags, a delicious dinner, an open bar, a live band, DJ, and raffles. My favorite was the photo booth, where I got some great shots with friends. Suzy (on the left) is a Pre-Nursing student at Harold Washington. Brenda is a graduate of DePaul's Graduate Entry Program who now works at Lurie Children's Hospital. Brenda mentored me and helped me feel welcome at the monthly NAHN meetings, while I've helped Suzy feel comfortable coming to meetings with me.
The next monthly meeting is at Rush University, and I hope my fellow UIC students will attend since it is so close to us! Sometimes the meetings are far, but always worth it. We recently had a meeting at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab- it's an amazing place! One meeting took place at the newly remodeled Elmhurst Hospital where we received a guided tour before the meeting. Being a part of NAHN is rewarding in so many ways! The camaraderie that comes from volunteer opportunities, social events, and regular meetings is the best!” ~Edith Barnes
