On April 9, 2019, 90 senior class students of the Von Steuben High School visited west campus colleges including the Applied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, and Nursing. There was also a panel after lunch, giving the students opportunity to ask questions about the various health programs offered here at UIC.
More specifically the College of Nursing Urban Helath program, assisted in the students' visit here in the newly renovated CON Lab. Volunteers held stations with hands on demonstrations including heart and lung assessment, wound care, and input and output management. Dressing changes, tracking output, the six rights of medication administration and manual blood pressure were just some of the skills introduced. Our wound care volunteer was Diana R., BSN-RN and a Certified Hospice and Palliative care nurse (CHPN), who has years of experience in nursing, wound care, and is now in post-acute care administration. Students expressed interest in not only the material that was being presented at each station, but the variety of opportunities nursing can offer. The UHP CON hopes to have instilled the inspiration or sparked interest in students interested in the healthcare field.
