The Celebration of 32nd National Black Nurses Day as well as Year of the Nurse and the Midwife 2020 was held at the Apostolic Faith Church on Friday, February 28. Three proud UIC alumni was named as Recognition of Nurse Honorees, Dr. Shiley Fleming, Dr. Eva Smith and Ruth Slaughter.
Dr. Fleming is distinguised as a legendary nurse for her work in the community. She received her Master of Science from UIC in 1977 and was the director of the Office for Faith Community Health Promotions. Dr. Smith was honored for her wondeful work in the nursing field. Dr. Smith was a faculty memeber for 32 years, reitired in 2014, and served as the coordinator of the Urban Health Program. Her main focus was social support and health promition of early breast cancer detection and survivorship amongst minority groups. Dr. Smith created an outreach program for hypertension education and social support in the Black community churches, and prepared a group of nurses as "church health educators" to assist individuals with hypertension managment.
