Tony Torres
Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Undergraduate Affairs
Advising Appointments | Express Advising
In my role I advise students throughout their academic journey, provide various sessions for interested students, coordinate our new students programs and student groups, and oversee a number of student engagement programs. In addition, I co-teach IS 100, a required course for all of our new students.
"I am most excited about the new opportunities this degree will bring to campus and learning more from the undergraduates who will be engaging in the classroom. I also look forward to seeing how our students apply what they learn to issues in society." -Tony Torres
Melissa Newell
Director of Undergraduate Affairs
Advising Appointments | Express Advising
My role at the iSchool is to provide leadership and strategic direction for the administration of the Bachelor of Science in information sciences (BSIS) degree, undergraduate student experience, and undergraduate recruitment and admission. I oversee a number of administrative processes for the degree program, and also work directly with students by providing academic advising and teaching our IS 100 course. I am always excited to hear about student interests, support students through academic challenges, and connect our campus community.
"I aspire to help each student customize their undergraduate experience to fit their interests and career pursuit. The interdisciplinary approach of information sciences provides an excellent opportunity for students to create their unique path." -Melissa Newell Read More
Meg Edwards
Assistant Dean for Student Affairs
At the iSchool my role is to support our students in their individual journey through their academic programs and to support the staff with whom you will connect with directly on a regular basis. That staff include Melissa Newell and Tony Torres, but also Rebecca Hodson (Career Services) and a host of other people who work directly with our graduate programs.
Specifically, if you have:
- joys or concerns that are impacting you as a student at the iSchool, you can share those with me.
- interest in getting involved in student organizations (login required) or iSchool student leadership (login required). I will be sharing more information about these opportunities and can answer your questions.
- needs that go beyond iSchool resources. I can work with my colleagues at the Office of the Dean of Students to assist you.
You are welcome to make an appointment with me https://go.illinois.edu/Meg_Advising (All Fall 2020 appointments will be virtual) and/or send me an email anytime you think I can be of service to you.
"If I could choose one word to describe the uniqueness of the iSchool student experience, it would be 'flexibility.' There is so much room in the curriculum, pre-professional opportunities, and student life to make choices that are critical and important to the individual student." -Meg Edwards
Rebecca Hodson
Assistant Director of Career Services
Visit our iSchool BSIS Career Services page to find more about what we provide to our students, including: Resumé and cover letter review, Interview preparation, Assistance in identifying practicum, internship, and experiential learning opportunities, and Job search help including how to develop a strategy, troubleshoot challenges and negotiation.
Some workshops and resources are restricted to only declared iSchool students, while others are open to all students. iSchool students may schedule a Career Advising Appointment.
"Students come from many different backgrounds and bring varied experiences to the program, so the students really make this place unique. Our staff provides a high level of individualized support throughout the program, which I think distinguishes us from other graduate programs." Rebecca Hodson
