A U. of I. student reported that she had been the victim of a scam resulting in the loss of about $2,500. The student received a message from an unknown person who offered to pay money in exchange for conversation. After exchanging text messages, the unknown person sent a $4,500 check to the student, who was directed to deposit the check and return some of the money to the sender. The student complied and later learned that the original check had bounced.
