The National Day of Encouragement is one that may not be known to many but is a day that should be given greater importance. It has been recognized nationally by President George W. Bush, but still remains unknown to most.
The National Day of Encouragement just occurred this Saturday, September 12th. This national day started its initiative when the Encouragement Foundation at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas launched an effort to get people to participate in a full day of encouragement. Arkansas then proclaimed the first official day of encouragement on August 22, 2007, but following this, President George W. Bush made it a national day on September 12th.
The main focus of this national day is to provide motivation and positive affirmation toward others. Motivation is something that keeps people going and words of encouragement can help continue these efforts. Encouragement shows strong importance because of how it helps recognize emerging talents, keeps someone trying, and lifts someone up when they are down. We all like to hear words of encouragement; this is a day where these words are recognized.

In relation to leadership, encouragement is a key factor. When leading a group, it is important to keep the spirits up of the other team members. Most followers will respond positively when they receive words of encouragement. Leaders should be reminding their followers how well they are doing as well as keep them directed toward the team’s goals.
Encouragement continues to be the motivation for others in many different situations. I have also looked to others’ encouragement to keep me going when times were hard. It has also represented that I had support from a specific leader. Always remember to give someone positive affirmation and take the extra step to show words of encouragement. This can help them feel supported, motivated, and appreciated.
