Why is Leadership Important in Social Justice?
Without leaders many influential movements wouldn’t have been pushed to occur. Leaders in social justice create structure to otherwise chaotic movements. We have all heard about historical key leaders in the advancement of social justice including Martin Luther King Jr., Angela Davis, and Malcolm X who fought for civil rights, Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth who fought for equal rights, and Marsha P. Johnson, Rupaul, and Christine Jorgensen who fought for LGBTQIA+ rights. Some 20th century influential leaders in social justice include Kimberle Crenshaw, Erika Andiola, Susan Burton, and Nihad Awad who all have dedicated their lives to making change in many of the social disparities we see present today.
The Importance of Followership:
Although the trailblazing actions of those mentioned above are extremely instrumental in the progression of social justice movements, those who dedicate themselves to followership help social justice gain traction! Here at the Illinois Leadership Center we define followership as someone that “Supports other leaders and their initiatives” and “Challenges the group and other leaders with respect and consideration”. This can be seen by teachers and professors that utilize articles, frameworks, and concepts created by leaders to educate others. A big way that we all can use followership to be better leaders in social justice is by utilizing social media to promote social justice and educate your audience. This can be done individually or through our positions in Student Organizations (RSOs), Sorority and Fraternity Affairs, volunteering organizations, and more!
