Some student employees at the Illinois Leadership Center have shared their experiences at the ILC and some benefits they earned from working here.
Claire Hulen:
What I have found most beneficial working at the ILC as a graphic designer is learning how to stay in the guidelines and keeping brand consistency, which is key to designing for a company or brand.
My role at the ILC has helped me professionally by learning how to work in an environment at the University level and personally by learning to connect with people from different backgrounds and life stories.
I think that you should work at the ILC because it is a great opportunity to become closer to the University while also helping students build themselves to become great people.
Alex Michaud:
Working for the Illinois Leadership Center has opened doors for me that I did not previously imagine. I have learned to work among a team while also having a taste of leading a professional work team. The Leadership Center offered me the chance to develop skills that few other undergraduate jobs can't provide. I had to learn how to speak in front of varying group sizes and was initially very uncomfortable with this. But, as the job required, I worked on these skills and by the end of my first year, I felt confident making public presentations across campus. I had always wanted to overcome my fear of public speaking but had not visualized it happening during my time as an undergrad. These skills translated to my other experiences as a teaching assistant in two separate classes and led me to feel comfortable teaching them.
The responsibilities laid at my feet as a staff member helped me to grow as a person and an employee. That is what helped me the most as a student. I was able to get firsthand experience working in an office with a supervisor and coworkers. This job was one of the best preparations for a real-life work environment that I could have had, and I was able to have this experience before graduating. For anyone considering applying to the ILC, I say with confidence that it is worth it. You will be asked to learn and grow and maybe push yourself outside your comfort zone, but these are requirements for any career you will have in the future. Not to mention, the leadership development and access to resources that you have as a student employee will give you an extra boost for your future career. All of these aspects of the Leadership Center have a positive impact in whatever direction you choose to follow after college.

Although I haven’t worked at the ILC for very long, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have to work there. I’ve had a lot of other jobs in a variety of places, and one thing that makes the ILC stand out is the attention and care they put in to ensure that you are growing and succeeding in your goals. The staff dedicates a lot of time towards helping you develop your leadership and professional skills, and to making sure that you are getting as much fulfillment as possible from your work at the ILC. They make an incredible effort to build community, so you always have a network to keep you feeling connected and supported.
After being involved in the ILC as a participant, it is really insightful to see the “behind-the-scenes” of what the ILC staff actually does. You can tell that the ILC practices what it preaches, and the result is a flourishing organization that has inspired me to become a better leader in all aspects of my life.
