Diverse environments are important in our life because they promote different perspectives, productivity, and life experiences. When we interact with people from different backgrounds, we can understand people’s actions and behaviors a lot better. Talking to someone new can make you appreciate their motivations and goals. Diversity is an important aspect of our life that we should promote more to help us be open to new ideas. As college students, we can promote diversity in a classroom setting, work field, and our everyday life.
The ILC does a great job of advocating diversity because many of the workshops they host bring people of all backgrounds together. If you are looking for a diverse setting or a place to learn more about diversity, the ILC is the place to go. Getting to learn new perspectives and interacting with new people can help you become a better leader. There are many types of leaders but one skill that is common among all of them is being able to understand and appreciate different people’s ideas and input. This is the reason why diversity is important and why it should be incorporated across many different environments.
I was part of The Institute earlier this year and it was an experience that shaped the way I view diversity in an academic setting. I had the opportunity to bond with people in less than a week because we were open to each other’s ideas. We all came from different places and we
were all of different ages but at the end of the day, we had meaningful conversations about what it meant to be a leader. All of the activities done in the program had a purpose and helped everyone get a better understanding of leadership. I would encourage others to look into programs like these because it will help you bond with new people and learn more about your strengths and weaknesses in a diverse setting.
