    Summer 21 Global Virtual Internship

    An eight-week, project-based internship experience placing students on small global teams with host companies in Africa, Asia, Europe or South America to address a business problem related to sustainability around the world. Students pay $1,190 to participate. May 24 – July 16. Coordinated by the Global Learning Collective.

  • Lecture- Breaking the Plastic Wave: Solving the Plastic Pollution Problem

    March 10, 12–1 pm. Plastic is ubiquitous on store shelves and in homes. It’s used widely because it’s versatile, cheap, and convenient, but it comes with a price. This talk from the Project Director, Conservation Science Program will give an overview of plastic pollution rates and highlight a solution that is better for the environment, the economy, and communities.

    Part-Time Job: iSEE hiring a student to develop video content on Sustainability

    The 10-hour-a-week position will run through the Spring 2021 semester and likely into the summer. Duties include researching content, recommending an appropriate video format, and working on a script for the iSEE videographer. The student will report to iSEE staff and work closely with an ad-hoc working group on the project.

    Apply for SSC funding, available for student-led projects

    Student-led projects with a budget of less than $10,000 are eligible for expedited review. All SSC projects must make a substantial impact on students. This may be a direct impact or an impact through education and engagement. All SSC funding is 100% from student green fees, so the projects funded by the students must benefit them. SSC encourages innovation and new technologies – creative projects are encouraged to apply.

    Saturday, April 23, 9:40am – 12pm. A Bioblitz is an attempt to record a snapshot of a specific area’s plant and wildlife species within a restricted time period. We'll be using iNaturalist to upload photos, videos, and sounds to a worldwide database of observations created and curated by fellow naturalists. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, develop your identification skills, and contribute to science. All are welcome, and no experience is required!

    The Bike Census Spring 2021 is next Wednesday, April 28, from 10 – 11 AM. Bike Census is a collaborative, community-wide effort between Facilities & Services (F&S) and Champaign County Bikes that began in 2013 as part of ongoing improvement efforts to support the campus’ Bicycle Friendly University status.

    ILC Podcast Discussion Club: Summer 2020

    The ILC will be starting a summer podcast discussion club for University of Illinois Faculty/Staff and students. The discussion club will meet for 1 hr every other week beginning the week of May 17 through end of July.  Participants will be given approximately 2 hours of podcast content to review prior to each session. The day of week and time will be determined based on those who express interest.

    Online Integrity i-Program

    The Online Integrity i-Program focuses on skills necessary for interpersonal and organizational ethical leadership. Students who participate in online Integrity will engage in virtual discussions and complete activities around values, ethics, and morals and discuss how to successfully navigate them.

    We are launching this summer scholars program to empower University of Illinois students to respond to community needs and challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Scholars will receive the following:

    A new community-based project matched to your interests, or support for existing projects, that can be completed remotelyTools for tracking service hours and activitiesOnline training and supportOpportunity to apply for mini grants to offset costs associated with service activitiesHonor and recognition for completing at least 40 hours of service during the 10-week summer program

    We CU Community Engaged Scholars may address a range of COVID-19 issues related to health promotion and disease prevention, economic recovery, social equity, communication, technology, and more. Scholars will be trained, supported, and actively engaged in the service and engagement mission of our university.

  • Lecture: Chemical and biological approaches for plastics upcycling

    Oct 14, 2021   12:00 - 1:00 pm  The accumulation of plastics waste in landfills and in the natural environment is creating a global pollution crisis. Moreover, current mechanical recycling approaches do not typically incentivize the reclamation of many waste plastics, and mechanical recycling is not universally applicable to all synthetic polymers. This talk will cover development efforts for selective approaches that use biological and chemical catalysis for plastics deconstruction and upcycling. Discussion and examples of techno-economic analysis and life-cycle assessment applied to chemical recycling scenarios will also be highlighted, both of which are essential tools to enable realistic solutions to this global pollution challenge.

    Research Grant Support (RGS)

    Due October 15, 2021. This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks, and materials or other ancillary costs.
