The Center for Global Studies (CGS) congratulates Steve Witt, Director of CGS, CGS Faculty Affiliates Faranak Miraftab, Annie Abbott, Scott Althaus, Melissa Goodnight, Barbara Hug, Ellen Moodie, and Ken Salo, and former CGS Graduate Assistant Vinisha Singh Basnet, for receiving the 2022-2023 Chancellor Jones Call to Action Research Program awards. The Chancellor’s Call to Action to Address Racism & Social Justice Research Program 2022-2023 awarded 25 research programs focused on systemic racial inequalities and injustice in our communities and higher education. The $2 million grant will fund academic research and community-based knowledge focused on advancing knowledge and addressing systemic racism and racial disparity in the three critical research areas:
- Systemic racism and social justice
- Law enforcement and criminal justice reform
- Disparities in health and health care
Funding for awarded projects ranged from $75,000 to $24,000. Among recipients of funding, Steve Witt and co-project leaders received $75,000 for the research program “Yellow Peril Redux: From Coolies to Concentration Camps, Trade Wars, and Coronavirus.” The program seeks to amplify knowledge about anti-Asian racism expressed in US history as the fear of the “Yellow Peril,” by bringing to academic and non-academic communities’ attention discourses focused on American misrepresentations and misperceptions of East Asians that continue to create imbalances in international relations.
