As an exercise psychologist, I study the benefits of yoga and mindfulness in youth with depression. Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice that promotes the unification of the body and mind. However, its benefits remain understudied in adolescents and communities of color.
This painting represents a modern-day Latina youth connecting with her mind and body, through the practice of present moment awareness. Although she struggles with depression, she finds alignment when connecting with her body and mind. She feels her heart and her flow of breath. She practices observing her thoughts and feelings without judgment. Most importantly she represents acceptance. And slowly, she builds her sanctuary within herself.
