How can the SSI help when funding for my position has been cut or eliminated?
The SSI provides a consistent process for managing temporary funding gaps and establishes a step-by-step plan for ADs, managers and staff to protect critical positions against funding loss. The goal of the policy is to provide clarity and transparency to staff and managers about how these funding gaps will be consistently handled across the organization.
When we find out funding has been cut, what happens next?
When funding is cut, that initiates a six-step process that begins with internal discussions between affected staff members, managers and ADs to determine the cause of the funding gap, near-term funding solutions, and work and development plans during the gap period.
Does placement on the SSI guarantee my continued employment?
No, placement on the SSI does not guarantee continued employment. It does, however, offer an opportunity to strengthen your position and align it with other areas of need at the Center. A work plan will be developed that balances time on the SSI account with proposed work and development activities during the gap.
What does “development activities” mean?
Development activities could include researching and preparing grant or funding proposals to secure financial support for sustaining a staff position.
If I’m placed on the SSI, how long will I be there? Am I in limbo?
Once someone is added to the SSI account, their status will be reviewed every 30 days. This provides an opportunity to show progress toward plan goals and to further review the funding outlook and adjust accordingly.
What happens if we are unable to secure funding for my position?
If all efforts to secure longer-term funding are unsuccessful, staff may be issued a Notice of Non-Reappointment (NONR). This will be done as a last resort and on a case-by-case basis. The goal of the SSI is to provide a framework for addressing funding losses and for keeping critical staff at the Center.
