Archie Coates, Principal at PlayLab, will be giving a lecture, "Throwing a Very Heavy Flag", on Wednesday November 5th at 5:30 pm at the Lawrence J. Plym Auditorium in Temple Hoyne Buell Hall. A reception preceding the event will be in the Atrium at 5:00 pm.
PlayLab is the extremely multidisciplinary design office of Archie Lee Coates IV and Jeff Franklin. With no particular focus, they explore the things that interest them. In 2010, with Family Architects, they proposed an initiative to build a water-filtering floating pool in the East River that became one of Time Magazine's Top 25 Best Inventions in 2013. Together they've launched a pie shop in Alabama, a graduate-level design program in Saudi Arabia, a mobile shop for Bruno Mars, a quarterly architecture publication called CLOG, a 700 SQ FT hideout in the woods in upstate New York, and 181 other projects. They're now teaching at an MFA program at the School of Visual Arts, called Design for Social Innovation. They're not always sure what they're doing or where they're going, but they like it that way.
