Yuxiu Zhang, a master’s student from China, is majoring in Special Education in the College of Education. The mother of two daughters, her journey into the special education field was inspired after her eldest daughter was diagnosed with autism. While seeking professional support for her, Yuxiu developed a deep interest in special education and a determination to support students with disabilities.
She has gained valuable practicum experience working with children with disabilities at Developmental Services Center (DSC) and has also supported first-grade students at Stratton Academy of the Arts. To better meet the diverse needs of students, she also enrolled in the Bilingual Endorsement Program. After graduation, she plans to become a teacher in Champaign.
“I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to receive the Kay Reeves Meginnis Special Education Scholarship,” Yuxiu writes. “Your continued support is a tremendous encouragement to me as I pursue my path in education. This support not only advances my educational journey but will also have a lasting impact on the students I will serve in the future—especially those with disabilities who need thoughtful, well-prepared educators. It reflects your deep commitment to education, to the University of Illinois, and most importantly, to the students with disabilities and their families.”
Kay Reeves Meginnis graduated from the University of Illinois with her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1958 and her Master of Science in Education in 1961. The Kay Reeves Meginnis Special Education Scholarship was established by Mrs. Meginnis' husband Paul (B.S. ’63 and MAS ‘64, Gies Business), and son Colin, to honor Kay's 30-year legacy of teaching students with special needs.
