Much like the light spectrum, parts of ourselves are not always visible to those around us. My research examines how we choose to express ourselves and how those expressions shift along a spectrum that reflects our internal identities. Just as light bends and stretches across a scene, our self-expression is never fixed. It expands and contracts depending on where we are and who we are with. With the people closest to us, we often reveal the widest range of who we are. My work focuses on capturing the variable ways in which people express themselves by creating inclusive survey measures that reflect the diversity of people's gendered experiences, especially those of us who exist beyond traditional social expectations.
