  • U.S. Forest Service Student & Recent Graduate Hiring Event in Madison, WI

    The U.S. Forest Service will conduct a Student and Recent Graduate Hiring Event at the 2016 Society of American Foresters Convention, held November 2-6 in Madison, Wisconsin.  Over 140 Pathways Student Intern and Recent Graduate positions will be available at the event. Many of these positions are for foresters, forestry technicians, natural resource managers, or biological technicians. In addition, a few of the positions will be for fisheries and wildlife biologists, and GIS technicians.  On-site applications will be accepted at the Society of American Foresters (SAF) Convention in Madison, Wisconsin, from 2 p.m. to 7p.m. on November 2nd, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 3rd.

    AmeriCorps Superior National Forest Crews (ages 18-25) receive on-the-job training to learn natural resources management skills and put those skills into practice working on projects throughout Superior National Forest. Superior National Forest seasonal crews are part of the Superior National Forest’s “Faces of Tomorrow” initiative, an effort to improve the diversity of their future workforce. Leader and member positions involve physically challenging, team-oriented outdoor work on conservation projects such as invasive species management, fuels reduction, campsite maintenance, timber stand improvement, trail maintenance, tree planting, timber marking, and wildfire suppression/prescribed burning.     The scientist is a Research Biologist in the Southern Research Station’s Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (SRS-4854). The mission of the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC) is to generate knowledge and tools needed to anticipate and respond to environmental threats. The most serious threats to forests and the benefits they provide inevitably involve complex factors interacting across multiple spatial and temporal scales. The Center’s challenge is to maintain a comprehensive and integrated research program to tackle these complex issues, while delivering knowledge to forest landowners, managers, decision-makers, scientists, and other interested audiences in a timely, useful, and user-friendly manner.

    The Morton Arboretum is seeking candidates for two full-time Research Assistant I positions (one in Forest Ecology and one in Tree Conservation Biology).  Research Assistants participate in laboratory and/or field operations for research programs in the Center for Tree Science, a global hub of research and expertise focused entirely on trees. Research Assistants at The Morton Arboretum are involved in all aspects of research: designing studies, planning and executing laboratory and field work, utilizing a variety of scientific instruments, assisting with lab management, testing protocols, training volunteers, organizing data, performing analysis, reading scientific literature, interpreting results, and editing manuscripts.  The Morton Arboretum strongly emphasizes professional development.  There will be opportunities to collaborate on scientific publications, present research at scientific meetings, and build new skills.
