Amstat News reports that the total number of bachelor's degrees in Statistics in the U.S. grew more than 20% between 2012 and 2013. UIUC also ranked fifth nationally in the number of Statistics MS degrees conferred during 2011-2013.

# UIUC Alumnus David Blackwell honored with the National Medal of Science

David Blackwell (1919-2010), "a towering figure in the fields of probability, statistics and the mathematical sciences," was honored with a posthumous Medal Oct 3, 2014. He received the PhD in Mathematics from UIUC in 1941 under the direction of Joseph Doob. He was a world renowned faculty member in Statistics and Mathematics at the University of California Berkeley.

Peibei Shi was selected for the prestigious travel award to present her paper at the ENAR 2015 Spring Meeting in Miami, Florida in March 2015. No more than 20 award winners are selected across the nation each year. Peibei's PhD thesis advisor is Professor Annie Qu.

# Stephen Portnoy Named Fellow of AAAS

Professor Emeritus Stephen Portnoy was named as a 2015 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the prestigious honor for "contributions to asymptotic theory and quantile processes and leadership in the development of robust regression methods," and for "building significant collaborations between statistical sciences and ecology."

# Annie Qu Named IMS Fellow

Peiyong Annie Qu, Professor of Statistics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been named Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). An induction ceremony took place July 11 at the World Congress in Probability and Statistics in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Naveen Narisetty is a new assistant professor in Statistics beginning Fall 2016. He joins our department after obtaining his PhD in Statistics from the University of Michigan. Dr. Narisetty's academic interests include Bayesian methodology and computation, data depth, high dimensional data analysis, large-scale computer models, and quantile-based inference.
