  • YWCA Women in Leadership Program 2019-2020, accepting applications

The YWCA is looking for a cohort of 2019-2020 interns and mentors to participate in our annual Women in Leadership Program. The internship is great for students who are interested in nonprofit work or consulting. The cohort of 25 students is split into five groups of five and each group is paired with one mentor. Additionally, each group is paired with an organization in the community and spend the fall semester researching and volunteering with the goal of identifying that organization’s major challenges. During the spring semester, students propose and implement a sustainable action plan to address one of these challenges. Throughout the year, students participate in professional and creative development workshops and conferences.

Women in Leadership is an opportunity for students at the University of Illinois who identify as women to practice problem solving and sustained team work. Last year, 91 percent of students said they saw an increase in their capacity to work collaboratively with others and 75 percent said they felt more prepared in their career development. Students also get the chance to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to address organizational challenges and engage in the broader Champaign-Urbana community.

Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply. The time commitment is 2-3 hours a week for interns and 1-2 hours a week for mentors. This internship is unpaid and not eligible for class credit. Priority Applications for the 2019-2020 School year are due June 1st, 2019, all other applications are due by August 31st, 2019. Students can find the requirements and apply here: http://www.ywcauofi.org/requirements.

  • YWCA's Women in Leadership internship program

Women in Leadership (WIL) is an intensive, two semester leadership and project management internship. Structured as a group consulting project, the internship allows interns to work directly with local human services agencies to learn about the nonprofit sector; identify organizational challenges; and research, propose, and implement solutions over the course of a school year.

In the fall, interns conduct research in a team about challenges that their assigned agency is facing, and in the spring, implement a project based on their research to provide solutions. The YWCA supplements interns’ work with additional training focusing on professional development, leadership skills, and building a working team, all of which are applied to team projects. Interns are guided through this process by mentors drawn from Urbana-Champaign’s excellent professional and graduate student pools.

Applications are due September 20th. For more information visit the YWCA website

  • WMD and Proliferation

The international community faces no shortage of challenges when it comes to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. The crisis in US-Russia relations, the slow pace of nuclear disarmament, the future of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, and the emergence of new technologies with military applications–these are just a few of the issues that nuclear policy professionals are working to address today. Each of these problems will require creative ideas and novel methodologies to surmount.

In this talk, Sarah Bidgood and Dave Schmerler (UIUC 2012) will highlight different opportunities and approaches to contribute to this process.  They will focus in particular on the need for greater diversity, including gender diversity, among experts and practitioners in this field. All students, regardless of their prior knowledge of nonproliferation, disarmament, or arms control, are welcome to attend.
