    State laws that tether faculty members’ tenure and promotions to state politics undermine the academic freedom that is the founding principle of postsecondary education and research in the U.S., according to Carol Symes, a professor of history at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Symes is also the vice president of the campus chapter of the American Association of University Professors.
