  • Crisis Communications Award: Dick Wheeler

The Crisis Communications Award is the type of award most of us would prefer not to win, because it’s almost always the result of having to deal with some of the most difficult situations we face as an institution. But we are so fortunate at Illinois to have some amazing leaders who step forward to guide us through difficult situations.

  • Media Relations Award: John Rogers

Engineering faculty member John Rogers sets a high bar for media outreach and responsiveness. He has an excellent sense of what is newsworthy and a gift for explaining science in layman’s terms. He works extensively with the News Bureau to prepare multimedia press packages when a major publication is imminent. Despite a very busy schedule, he responds quickly to all media requests – even those from small markets. Recently, he was willing on a two-hour notice to rearrange his schedule and drive down to the WDWS studios to complete an interview with NPR.

  • Team Player Award: OCE-ATLAS Digital Media

From handling high-profile, last-minute requests for video footage, to being a brand leader by using the new video bumpers for all Coursera classes created at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, to working nights and weekends to ensure that events such as Commencement and Chancellor’s Town Halls can be viewed live online worldwide, the staff at OCE-ATLAS Digital Media embody the spirit of team players.

  • Branding Leadership Award: Office of Admissions

And now we present the Branding Leadership award. This year’s recipient understands that good branding is more than producing brochures, mailings and websites – that it’s first about understanding their audiences. With careful timing, consistent messaging, and identity, the communications team at the Office of Admissions works like a finely tuned orchestra — in the end producing much more than the sum of its parts.

  • Innovation in Marketing Award: Division of Intercollegiate Athletics

The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at Illinois is its own brand. In fact, it has its own mark – the Block I – which would be strictly forbidden for campus units. But as one of our most important affiliated agencies, DIA has been brand-building for much longer than the academic institution has, and now, under the direction of Mike Thomas, Warren Hood and many others, it has launched the Illinois: Our State, Our Team campaign and is including that slogan on everything it does, from billboards to Public Service Announcements.

  • Communicator of the Year Award: Tracy McCabe: College of Business

This year's Communicator of the Year is someone who exemplifies the qualities we think make strong leaders in sharing the Illinois story of excellence. Service, innovation, advancement and excellence. This year’s winner is Tracy McCabe from the College of Business.

Under Tracy’s leadership, the College of Business has been a campus leader in marketing and branding efforts, setting a standard for professionalism, creativity and measurability.
