  • Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy Workshop and Lecture Series, Apply by 7/1

The UIC Energy Initiative would like to invite students to apply to our 5th annual Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy to be held August 6-18 here at UIC. The SISE program is free for all participants.

    Application Deadline: July 1, 2015

Application Requirements: Online application, resume, two letters of recommendation

Applicant Profile: All academic disciplines accepted; graduate or senior-level undergraduate

Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy

In partnership with Argonne National Laboratory; Clean Energy Trust; Energy Policy Institute at Chicago (University of Chicago); Institute for Sustainability & Energy at Northwestern (Northwestern University); Loyola University; Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (Illinois Institute of Technology)

    The SISE Program

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals.  From August 6-18, a diverse body of participants will engage a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability-related topics through daily presentations, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits, and networking opportunities with leading research institutions and companies in the digital technology and energy sectors. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. Graduates leave as thoughtful and informed global citizens with a firm foundation and expanded network for careers in sustainability, energy, and smart technology and infrastructure.

    2015 Theme: Digital Rebirth

Digital technology now allows us to capture the dynamics of entire systems, from manufacturing lines to the electricity grid to the flow of people, cars, water, and waste. Given the need to service concentrated population clusters, cities in particular can take advantage of digital technology and the Internet of Things to improve systems delivering energy, water, and transportation. Yet this requires addressing such challenges as retrofitting or replacing aging infrastructure, data collection and management, privacy issues, cybersecurity risks, and the formation of new business and financing models.

SISE will 1) explore the crossroads of digital manufacturing, smart cities, and energy; 2) dive deep into specific applications such as smart grid and the connected vehicle; and 3) theorize how these innovations can usher in a more sustainable future. Topics will revolve around integration; sourcing and use of supply; reduction of waste; energy and resource demands; big data collection and use; anticipation, reaction, and adaptation to the unexpected; and sensors, connectivity, and cybersecurity.

    Now Accepting Applications

Admission into the program is highly competitive, drawing from a national pool of applicants. Applicants accepted into the program can expect to receive lodging support for the duration of the 2-week program and some meals on weekdays. Many will receive partial support for travel costs.

Senior-level undergraduates (as of the fall of 2014), graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy who are living, working, or studying in the United States are eligible to apply. An online application form, a resume, and three letters of reference are required. Applications will be accepted through July 1, 2015. More information is provided on the SISE website.

We invite you to learn more about the SISE program by visiting us on the web. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Thomas Aláan (uic.sise.admissions@gmail.com), SISE Program Coordinator. We look forward to seeing some of you in Chicago this summer!

  • 2015 UIC Urban Forum: Remaking the Urban Social Contract

REMAKING THE URBAN SOCIAL CONTRACT: Health, Energy and the Environment September 17, 2015 The politically tumultuous 1960s and early 1970s in the U.S. resulted in national, state and local governments promulgating policies designed to address a host of societal issues, including a degrading environment (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act of 1969), unaffordable health care for the poor and elderly (e.g., Medicaid and Medicare in 1965), and energy conservation (e.g., fuel efficiency standards in 1975). Although a broad commitment to meet these societal issues created a broad social contract among the people, the contract is becoming unraveled and contested even as important advances in these three areas have been undertaken in the past decade.

The challenges to the old social compact are most visibly played out in the nation's metropolitan regions, which generate 85% of the gross domestic product. Attacks on government regulation of health, energy and environment issues coupled with the recent contraction of the economy and challenges to the validity of sc ientific inquiry have created a political situation in which metropolitan regions and cities are grappling again with redefining, revising and remaking the social contract that prevailed for nearly half a century. With particular emphasis on the social contracts and political agreements on health, energy and environmental policies of the last 40-50 years, the 2015 UIC Urban Forum focuses on the substantive and philosophical shifts in the urban social contract and examines the remaking of urban social contracts today.

White papers for the 2015 UIC Urban Forum: The Overview White Paper From its origin, the notion of social contract seems to be related to different features of the collective (public?), sometimes based on society and others in specific institutions. From Socrates' argument about the need to obey human law to ensure the organization and functioning of society to a critical contemporary understanding of social rules as possible instrument of social control, theories about the social contract have historically accompanied the philosophical and political debate about the role of state and the making of public policy. This paper suggests that the contemporary shift in the balance of political and economic power represents an opportunity to review social contract theories from the understanding of the changing role of the state in the rise of economic power (and urban policies). David Perry and Natalia Villamizar-Duarte, Department of Urban Planning and Policy, University of Illinois at Chicago.

White Paper 1: The social contract on health issues William Kling and Emily Stiehl, School of Public Health, University of Illinois at Chicago

White Paper 2: The social contract on environmental issues Anthony Townsend, New York University

White Paper 3: The social contract on energy issues Howard Learner, Environmental Law & Policy Center

White Paper 4: NGOs, Governments, Private Providers of social and regulatory services. David McDonald, Queen's University

  • Call for Submissions: In Translation: A student discussion of migration, language, and identity-MAY 15, 2015

Call for Submissions: In Translation: A student discussion of migration, language, and identity

Sponsored by the UIC AANAPISI Initiative

In Translation is seeking articles, essays, and original artwork for publication in the annual edition, released Fall 2015. The purpose of this magazine is to communicate to the UIC community at large about the lives and experiences of UIC students and writers. Multilingual and English language learning writers are especially encouraged to submit. Essays capturing the unique beauty of multilingual voices is especially desirable.

Submissions can be made in two categories:

    Academic writing

This first category is for students writing about migration, language, and identity while using academic discourse. This category includes but is not limited to essays written for academic courses.

    Creative non-fiction

Submissions to this category can include but are not limited to memoirs, feature articles, and narratives about the lives of UIC students and their experiences with language and identity. While the journal seeks stories about true experiences and the real opinions of students, prose style may take on the standards of any discourse, from public to Non-Western. Any pieces submitted in a language other than English should be accompanied by an English translation: any texts selected for publication using a language other than English will be published in both/all languages submitted. Code-meshed or multilingual texts (containing a mix of languages or varieties) do not need translations if the meaning can be understood from context.

Deadline for submission is May 15th, 2015. Submissions should be emailed to uicthroughtheglass@gmail.com

Past issues of In Translation can be found at writingcenter.uic.edu.

Moynihan's report, entitled, "The Negro Family: The Case for National Action," famously concluded that the persistent nature of black poverty in America was at least partly attributable to the relative absence of nuclear families.  Geary's research complicates and challenges this typical understanding of the report and Patricia Sullivan has called Geary's forthcoming book, "a path-breaking study of the limits of liberalism during a time of racial crisis and transformation."

Geary is the Mark Pigott Lecturer at Trinity College, Dublin.  His first book was Radical Ambition: C. Wright Mills, The Left, and American Social Thought (2009).  He received his MA and PhD from the UC Berkeley and his BA from the University of Virginia.  Hope to see you April 8 at 3pm!

The talk is sponsored by the Department of History and is free and open to the public.

Students are able to complete the degree in a shortened time frame through rigorous daytime courses and extended semesters in the fall and spring. The final semester of advanced courses may be completed in the summer or in the subsequent fall semester if an individual prefers to complete an internship before graduating.  More information can be found at the link below or by contacting our Director of Admissions and Student Enrollment, Garry Cooke at 312-413-2692 or cookeg@uic.edu.
