  • 2016 Regenerative Medicine Summer Internship Opportunities

The SRF Summer Scholars Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Under the guidance of a scientific mentor, each Summer Scholar is responsible for his or her own research project in such exciting areas as genetic engineering and stem cell research. The Summer Scholars Program emphasizes development of both laboratory and communication skills to develop well-rounded scientists who can work equally well with other scientists or the general public. Students participating in the program will hone their writing skills via periodic reports, which are designed to emulate text scientists commonly must produce. Additionally, a poster presentation at a SRF-sponsored conference at the end of the summer will provide students with an opportunity to put all of their newly developed communication skills into practice when they present their results to scientists from other research institutions.

Paid positions are available at such world-renowned research institutions as:

Buck Institute for Research on Aging

    Harvard School of Medicine

    Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute

    Scripps Research Institute

    SRF Research Center

Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine

The online application and full descriptions of each research project can be found at www.sens.org/2016-summer-scholars. Applications will be accepted until 12 pm PST February 1, 2016.

If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact Gregory Chin at greg.chin@sens.org

  • Career Resources for Scientists

    National Science Foundation

This is a great link to science career statistics provided by the National Science Foundation. It contains links to other science stories, opportunities and societies through its homepage.

    Link: http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/showpub.cfm?TopID=14NatureJobs

Supported by the publishing group Nature, this science career site splits jobs into two “channels”: physical sciences and life sciences. Each channel features news and feature stories, along with a job search engine. As of June 2005, the site had 169 physical science jobs and over 1,000 life science jobs posted. The jobs were divided evenly between full time and part-time positions, spanning everything from university faculty positions, to fellowships, to facilities managers. With big-time employers such as Proctor & Gamble, The Institute of Cancer Research, and GE (to name a few), this is definitely a site worth checking out.

As the fall term begins, it's time to think about applying for the Fulbright Student Award and the Schwarzman Scholarship! Both of these awards provide exciting opportunities for going abroad to further your education.  They both seek high achieving, highly motivated students.

There is a Fulbright and Schwarzman information session on Thursday, Sept. 3 at noon in 850 UH or you can follow up with one of our staff (below) if you have questions.

    The Fulbright Student Award
The Fulbright sends students abroad to do a program of study or research in one of around 160 countries OR to teach English for a year in one of over 50 countries. You must have your bachelor's degree before you leave, but you can apply at any point in your life once you have that first degree. The UIC campus deadline is Sept. 11. There is still time to apply! You can find detailed information about the Fulbright at http://us.fulbrightonline.org/fulbright-us-student-program

    Fulbright Study/Research Grant

Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help you study or learn more about your proposed topic.

    The English Teaching Assistantship
Fulbright also offers students the chance to teach English.  Options exist at the high school, elementary and the college level. Many countries have no language requirement. The English Teaching Assistants (ETA) are generally students who have some teaching experience, and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

Strong candidates will have excellent academic qualifications and an interest in learning about China as well as leadership experience. Enrolled students must be nominated by UIC.
