|
What is the European Union? Why does it matter for politics in Europe? And how does it affect the place of Europe in the world? This course uses the concept of governance to explore these three questions. We will look at governance inside the EU, and at the role of the EU in the governance of its neighboring areas and in global governance.

Some of the group's projects focus on elucidating molecular structures of substances present in several known plants that have been traditionally used due to their therapeutic properties. Students on the Arles program have the advantage of taking these courses, which are equivalent to those offered on campus, on an accelerated program in a completely French context. This program will improve their fluency in the French language and will also enrich them culturally. For a month students will live with host families and see how French people live, work and enjoy their free time.

This curated educational tour at the center and in lesser-known neighborhoods of Athens offers students a journey of exploration into stories of culture at one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities.
Not only in art and culture but also in entrepreneurial business and digital technology students will observe patterns from mythological and literary stories showing creative ways Greeks deal with change through the ages especially the modern period. The course also asks questions having to do with perceptions of death, spirituality and the self.

The course is designed to engage students in the development of pathways towards sustainable and resilient designs for food, energy, and water supply chains suited for such disaster-prone regions. Students will investigate background cultural, political, and social factors that provide context for specific disaster-prone regions. Students will work with local communities, aid organizations, and peer institutions in the identification and implementation of sustainable and resilient responses.

In this course students will explore how current, neo-liberal and global economic forces shape and are shaping Cape Town's gendered, racial and spatial landscapes of violent exclusion at the neighborhood and city wide scales. Students will journal their “walking-in-place” experiences and reflect on how the many, different and interacting social hierarchies of inhabitants struggle for a dignified livelihood and livable space in the city.

NRES 285/293: Environment and Society in a Changing Arctic
|
This course focuses on the increasing international interest in the arctic in the wake of the global climate change and growing international demand for minerals and energy resources, which is having profound effects across the circumpolar North. The course also examines how the harsh arctic desert climate has shaped arctic communities, and how arctic communities have impacted portions of the arctic environment. Students will develop skills to rigorously analyze arctic problems. Students will spend the first two weeks in Stockholm and then the final week in Svalbard conducting field research.

‘Sustainable Agriculture & Eco-Tourism in the Galapagos Islands’ is a 6-week summer course set in one of the most pristine and biodiverse habitats on the planet. Participants will spend their time both exploring and learning about the renowned local flora and fauna that has made Galapagos famous worldwide, but also the people that call it home.
Students will get the chance to gain real hands-on experience working on sustainable agricultural and economic development projects that will have a direct impact on the policies set in place to assure the continued sustainability of livelihoods and conservation efforts in the Galapagos Islands for years to come.
