Virginia Tech Interdisciplinary Research Traineeships for Biologists and Engineers in Multi-Scale Transport in Physiological and Environmental Systems (MultiSTEPS)
http://www.multisteps.ictas.vt.edu/
Program supported by: NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeships (IGERT) and Virginia Tech Interdisciplinary Education Program (IGEP)
Seeking applications from prospective students with bachelor's or master's degrees in engineering or biology (or closely related fields) motivated to conduct research, think, collaborate, and solve problems at the intersection of the engineering and biological sciences.
Trainees will study the dynamic processes that move material, momentum, and energy within, around, through, and between biological systems, from single molecules to the environment. Discovery, analysis, and solution of critical issues in biological transport require truly interdisciplinary researchers who are educated in both engineering and biology, who merge these perspectives, and who can communicate effectively with fellow researchers, policy makers, and the public.
Possible research projects include but are not limited to:
-protein structure,
-cell motility, and cell cycle regulation,
-drug delivery,
-cardiovascular disease,
-cancer detection and metastasis
-atmospheric and waterway transport of microbes, bacteria, and nanoparticles
Trainees receive:
* $30,000 stipend
* Full tuition, fees & health insurance
* A multistep integrated framework of education and research in biology and engineering, including:
- interdisciplinary graduate education
- cross-disciplinary research rotations
- cross-disciplinary faculty co-advisors
- education for professional development
- mentoring by interdisciplinary faculty team
- multiSTEPS classes & seminars
- extensive research facilities
Earn a PhD from a participating department:
-Biological Sciences
-Biological Systems Engineering
-Biomedical Engineering and Sciences
-Electrical and Computer Engineering
-Engineering Science and Mechanics
-Mechanical Engineering
-Plant Pathology, Physiology, and Weed Science
Applications are accepted throughout the year but for consideration for Fall 2013 applications are encouraged by December 31
