St. Louis Symphony Performance
Fusing a rich history with exhilarating vision, the St. Louis Symphony and its music director, David Robertson, inspire and enthrall audiences and fellow musicians alike. Founded in 1880, the St. Louis Symphony is the second-oldest orchestra in the country and is widely considered one of the world’s finest. For this concert, the orchestra is joined for Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 by Yefim Bronfman, "a regal bear of a pianist with seemingly limitless technique" (New York Times). The program also features violinist Erin Schreiber on Vaughan Williams’ gorgeously ethereal The Lark Ascending, which was named in a recent BBC poll as Britain’s favorite “desert island disc,” and Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s “Inextinguishable” Symphony, which was composed against the backdrop of World War I and which at its first performance bore the program note “Music is life, and like it inextinguishable.” Join the Facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/678027118932022/

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Performance
One of the finest orchestras in the world performing in one of the finest concert halls in the world—what a magnificent combination. Add to that one of the finest conductors—Musical America’s 2012 Conductor of the Year, the in-demand and engaging Jaap van Zweden, who for 17 years was concertmaster (the youngest ever) of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra—and you have an electrifying installment of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s annual engagement with Krannert Center. Bartók’s virtuosic violin rhapsodies, inspired by Hungarian folk music, feature CSO concertmaster Robert Chen, while the monumental Fifth Symphony of Mahler carries us on a transcendental journey from tragedy to triumph.
