“Twelfth Night” tells the tale of the shipwrecked Viola and her misadventures in the kingdom of Illyria where she dresses up like a man and enters a madcap world of surly servants, drunk knights, and wise fools. This period dress production focuses on themes of pain and pleasure inherent in the play, represented by states of relaxation and obligation. A person has moments where they are forced to act a certain way out of a greater sense of duty or they can ignore those obligations in order to live an enjoyable life. Most people temper both of these concepts in their everyday life. Students have to think about their future while juggling a social life and the characters of “Twelfth Night” have to as well. These two states of being make themselves apparent in our lives through our pleasures and our pains. We wish that we could constantly be relaxing but we need structure and obligation to keep us functioning. The characters of “Twelfth Night” are no different. We all have our triumphs and our tragedies, are pitfalls and pratfalls and this production will emphasize that.
