Frothing with drama from the start and liberally laced with dark humour and insults, “Becky Shaw” combines first date fears with the realities of broken families. Follow Suzanna, Susan, Max, Andrew, and Becky as they navigate complicated waters full of emotional sharks and shipwrecks. As Suzanna and Andrew set up Max on a blind date with Becky, they must take care of Suzanna’s ailing mother, Susan, who are all dealing with financial problems. They do not immediately fall in love and there isn’t a polite goodnight kiss. Instead, Becky, who works with Andrew, creates more problems than she is supposed to solve. The play introduces original ideas about what makes a family, and the responsibilities that go with being a member of a family. It also questions the responsibility we have to individuals after only briefly meeting. Do we owe them respect, confidence, or patience, if anything at all? How can someone impact you if you only spend one evening with them?
