A highpoint of this celebration will be a visit to our campus by the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, William Adams on October 29, 2015, and the brochure will be presented to him during his visit.
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess strong word-processing skills, a fine-tuned appreciation of stylistic and grammatical precision, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. A background in writing/literature and a broad interest in the humanities and/or publishing are preferred.
Primary duties will consist of preparing the grants list for publication, which will entail significant reformatting, styling, and, ultimately, copy-editing. This task may also involve some light fact-checking along the way. In addition, assistance with indexing the list (tagging/sorting it by categories) for online listing, may be required. The intern will also participate in the proofing process for the brochure, and will have the opportunity to learn about copy-editing and publication practices more generally from a former consumer-magazine industry professional. In addition, if this is of interest, the intern will have the opportunity to work alongside the designer to learn about layout, typography, and design principles. The intern may be tasked with writing captions and other brief sections of copy for the brochure. As the Chairman’s visit draws near, assistance with preparations for the related anniversary celebration events may be required.
This unpaid position is an eight-week position that will require 4 to 6 hours of work per week at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, beginning September 8, 2015, as well as enrollment in English 199 (the Internship Seminar) for Fall 2015.
To apply, please email a one-page letter of interest, a resume, and a list of three references (academic or non-academic, so long as they can speak to your skills and work ethic) to iprh@illinois.edu by Monday, August 31 (though applications will be considered within a few days after this date) with “Editorial Internship” in the subject line. Letters may be addressed and questions directed to IPRH Associate Director, Nancy Castro (ncastro@illinois.edu).
