The Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (CSAMES) believes that foreign language study and study abroad are essential components of international education. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Undergraduate International Education and Foreign Language program (Title VIa), CSAMES will offer up to nine scholarships of $1,000-$1,500 each to University of Illinois undergraduate students, to be used for intensive summer study of a language of South Asia, or to be used for study abroad in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan or the Republic of the Maldives). It is anticipated that students who are offered these scholarships will use them for study abroad or intensive language study between December 2015 and December 2016. These grants are available to undergraduate students from any college or discipline. Because these scholarships come from federal funds, air travel conducted on these scholarships must comply with the Fly America Act (see http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/103191).
To apply for a summer language study or study abroad scholarship, fill out the CSAMES Undergraduate Scholarship Application form and submit it electronically by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2015 to csames@illinois.edu, with a copy to aswillms@illinois.edu. Applications will be reviewed by the CSAMES Executive Committee, an elected body consisting of CSAMES faculty drawn from diverse disciplines. Applicants should receive word of the outcome of their applications by October 23, 2015. For the application, contact Elizabeth Rockman at rockman@illinois.edu or for additional information, please contact: Angela S. Williams, Associate Director, Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at (217) 244-5939.
