The speaker is Harry Boyte, who is the author of Democracy’s Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and Universities. The talk will be Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. in 1092 Lincoln Hall, with a reception afterwards. This the fourth lecture in the campus series, Prioritizing Undergraduate Education at Illinois. Professors Clare Crowston and Christopher Higgins are co-chairs of the lecture series committee, and would be pleased to receive your comments.
Harry Boyte (University of Minnesota; Augsburg College; Kettering Foundation) is a social theorist with a background in civil rights organizing. His books include Everyday Politics: Reconnecting Citizens and Public Life (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2004); Building America: The Democratic Promise of Public Work, with Nan Kari (Temple University Press, 1996), and his recent edited volume, Democracy's Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and Universities (Vanderbilt University Press, 2015). A leading architect of the new civics, Boyte writes about democracy, education, professionalism, and public life in the New York Times, Huffington Post, and a range of academic and popular outlets.
