iUnite Week 2016 Keynote: Tearing Hatred from the Sky, Bree Newsome, Community Organizer and Activist Who Removed the Confederate Battle Flag from the South Carolina State House, Illini Union, Rooms ABC, 7 pm. Sponsored by the Office of Inclusion & Intercultural Relations, Inclusive Illinois, and the Illini Union Board. Driven by an unwavering belief in the power of the individual to make change, Bree Newsome established herself as a touchstone of empowerment for disenfranchised people around the world when she tore down the Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina statehouse in 2015, in the name of social justice and equality. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Newsome seamlessly blends her artistic talents with her passionate activism, educating and inspiring audiences to organize and stand together to transform society into a world where the lives and contributions of all individuals are recognized equally. Human Library Champaign-Urbana, Krannert Center for Performing Arts lobby, 5-9pm. Sponsored by the University Library. Human Library is an international organization that aims to create a safe space for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. During a Human Library event, a ‘reader’ (any member of the community) browses out catalog and decides to have a conversation with a book. Volunteer books are individuals from all walks of life who have experienced discrimination/marginalization based upon race, religion, sexual preference, class, gender identity, sex, age, lifestyle choices, disability and other aspects of their life and who want to share their experiences to promote knowledge and challenge stigma surrounding their identity.
