"Who Owns the News? Question-Posing and Public Discussions in 450,000 New York Times Comments" with John Gallagher (English) will be on September 28, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. in the IPRH Seminar Room, Levis Faculty Center, Fourth Floor (919 West Illinois Street, Urbana, IL).
Online comments have become a divisive issue in public discourse, known for their vitriolic language. Rather than avoid the comments, however, why not examine them for what might they reveal about online discourse and Internet culture? Gallagher will present his big-data analysis of 450,000 comments from The New York Times. He argues that commenters augment discussions of the news by offering critical commentary through their frequent question-posing. In this presentation, he also will share insights into the approaches and tools used for digital rhetoric and writing.
