TOPIC: Heritage, Tourism, and Economic Development in the Land of the Incas
FALL 2017 SCHEDULE: 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays, October 25 - December 13 (the second 8 weeks) on campus = 1 credit
followed by 2 weeks (January 1-12, 2018) in Peru = 2 credits
Program cost including tuition, airfares, hotels, activities and most meals = $3,500 (some partial scholarships are expected to be available)
Join Professor Helaine Silverman (Anthropology) on this thrilling exploration of the heartland of the ancient Inca Empire. See its heritage expressed by the descendants of that great Andean society. Visit spectacular ruins, including the renowned “lost city” of Machu Picchu. Fly over the snow-capped Andes mountains. Travel on one of the most scenic train rides in the world. See the beautiful colonial churches built by the Spanish conquerors in Cuzco, the former Inca capital and today the epicenter of global tourism. Learn about the politics and policies of tourism and heritage management that promote economic development in this stunning highland region. S ample the delicious cuisine of Peru, which has achieved global acclaim. Stay in unique hotels. Participate in many interactions with local people. Finish the trip with two fascinating days in Peru's capital city, Lima, where we continue our time-travel through the heritage and economic development of the pre-Columbian, colonial and modern city. Enjoy a special tour of the UNESCO-designated historic center and a full day at a restored hacienda. Professor Silverman spent the first half of her adult life in Peru working as an archaeologist and since then has conducted more than ten years of contemporary research there. This study-abroad experience offers an insider's view of the country.
