Acronyms for New Students
|
We tend to use a number of abbreviations that are helpful to know:
CHP = Campus Honors Program. Students in the CHP are called Chancellor’s Scholars.
HoHo = Honors House, 1205 West Oregon Street, Urbana, Illinois 61801 (where many of your classes are, and most of the fun!)
*The Honors House office is open 8:30 – 5 p.m. M-F unless otherwise noted; the Honors House is otherwise open Sunday 5-10 p.m., and Monday – Thursday 5-10 p.m. as well, for studying, SAS programs, and HSC events.*
HSC = Honors Student Council, the student committee that plans great programs for all Chancellor’s Scholars. Current officers are Joey Bryant (junior, Physics), Viraat Goel (junior, Bioengineering), Connor Reardon (sophomore, Computer Science), and Justin Tiao (sophomore, DGS Undeclared); meetings are open to all Chancellor’s Scholars, and are held on Mondays (with the exception of the next meeting time -- 5 p.m. the Tuesday after Labor Day, 9/5/17) at 5 p.m. in the Honors House
KDR = Krannert Dress Rehearsals. These are held in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (KCPA), 500 S. Goodwin, Urbana.
The schedule for KDRs will come within the next couple weeks, and sign-ups will begin in early September.
SAS = Scholar Adventurers Series of faculty lectures and special workshops, often held in the Honors House classroom (room 212)
The schedule for SAS programs will come out in the next few weeks, and sign-ups will begin in mid-September.

The Homecoming Court is composed of 20 student leaders in senior standing, who are selected based on their academic achievements, campus leadership and community involvement. Those selected to serve on the court are viewed as role models for their peers and outstanding representatives of the University of Illinois Student body.

Apply by 9/29/17: David H. Prindable Undergraduate Internship at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities
|
Undergraduate majors in humanities disciplines are invited to apply for a paid internship in communications and undergraduate outreach at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH), the campus humanities hub. The successful candidate will assist IPRH with its communications strategy, particularly its email communications and social-media presence, in addition to serving as an IPRH’s undergraduate liaison and chief strategist on undergraduate engagement. This position is funded thanks to a generous gift from David F. Prindable.
To be considered for this internship, candidates must possess strong writing and communications skills, excellent attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and an investigative mind. A broad interest in the humanities is preferred.
The position commences October 16, 2017 and ends May 15, 2017. The Prindable intern will work approximately two to three hours per week, for 24 weeks, at the rate of $15.75 per hour (up to $1,000 per year). There is flexibility regarding the hours to be worked.

Apply to the Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board by 9/8/17

Applications sought for the Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board, open to students who:
*Are an undergraduate for the current year who will be on campus (not studying abroad or graduating early) both this fall and in Spring, 2018;
*Have a strong record of academic achievement as evidenced by a 3.0 GPA or above in their college courses or, for first-time new freshmen or transfer students, as evidenced by what you would consider a “very strong” high school or prior institution record;
*Are interested in academic affairs initiatives and activities on campus;
*Are involved in both academic and extracurricular activities here or, for first-time new freshmen or transfer students, were involved at their previous institution.
Please be aware that a primary requirement for participation is availability during the set meeting times for the fall, no class or work conflicts. Fall meeting dates are Wednesday, October 4; Friday, November 10; and Friday, December 8, all from noon to 1 p.m. with lunch provided.

1) Engineering for Social Justice Scholars Program
[Fall‘17] ENG 398: Special Topics Section SJS--Social Justice and STEM Education (4 credits; CRN: 67031). Meets W 3:00-4:50 p.m.
[Sp‘18] ENG 398: Special Topics Section LES--Leadership in Engineering for Social Justice (4 credits; CRN: 65401). Meets W 3:00-4:50 p.m.
The Engineering for Social Justice Scholars Program is a leadership initiative that includes a 2-semester service-learning course experience. Students apply engineering skills in STEM education outreach activities with underrepresented youth in Champaign (T or R 4:30-5:30) and create meaningful social action projects to support engineering for social justice. The courses include exploration of a range of topics related to social justice and engineering, including structural oppression and inequalities in schooling, the impact of racial and ethnic disparities in STEM education, human-centered design and appropriate technology, sustainable community development, and history, culture, and politics in engineering. The ESJ Scholars Program is a 2-semester commitment. Courses count toward College of Engineering Liberal Education Electives & Technical Electives for the ILEE Degree.

2) STEM Education Practicum
ENG 298: Special Topics Section SEP (2 credits; CRN: 69674). Meets R 3:30-4:50 p.m.
In this service-learning course, students engage with diverse middle school students from Chicago Public Schools as part of the ICANEXSEL (Illinois-ChiS&E Alliance for Nurturing Excellence in STEM Education and Leadership) program. The outreach program includes hands-on activities, experiments, and engaging math and science lessons and will be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Students must be available to facilitate several (4-5) Saturday sessions under the mentorship of Chicago teachers (transportation to/from Chicago will be provided). The course includes discussion of topics related to STEM education, curriculum review, and reflection on the fieldwork experiences.
3) Design Thinking for Social Innovation in South Africa
ENG 398: Special Topics Section DTS (3 credits; CRN: 69673). Meets T R 12:30-1:50 p.m. [2nd 8-week course plus Winter Study Tour in Cape Town]
This 2nd 8-week service-learning course explores topics related to social innovation and sustainable development in contemporary South Africa. Through case studies, discussion, and interactive activities, students will develop skills in the application of design thinking for social innovation and gain a deeper understanding of the role of engineering in social innovation. Students will work with community partners in Cape Town, South Africa to conceptualize and develop projects that can address genuine social, economic, environmental and/or technical problems of interest to community stakeholders.
The course includes a faculty-led trip to Cape Town during winter intersession (tentative dates: 12/26/17-1/14/18), in which students engage in short-term service-learning internships with nonprofit partners in work related to conservation, environmental sustainability, and community development. Students can expect to enhance their communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and intercultural skills while learning with and from community partners. Educational and cultural excursions will be included as well as opportunities to learn more about the work of social innovators in Khayelitsha Township. Travel costs paid separately. Students may be eligible for IPENG Travel Fellowships (Nov. 1 deadline) and I4I Study Abroad Scholarships (Sept. 15 deadline).
