The CHP’s Summer Research Awards offer Chancellor's Scholars an opportunity to develop and explore a topic of their choice, working on the Urbana-Champaign campus under the supervision of a University of Illinois faculty member. The program provides a stipend of $2,000 for eight weeks. To apply, a student must identify a University of Illinois faculty member who will help design (and plan to monitor) an appropriate research project that will culminate in a written research paper. The Chancellor’s Scholars’ Travel Fund supports domestic and foreign travel during the summer for such purposes as studying abroad, taking advantage of an internship opportunity, or gaining access to research resources. A maximum of $1,000 is awarded to each recipient for travel outside the boundaries of the United States ($500 maximum for travel within the U.S.). Only Chancellor’s Scholars are eligible to apply for the awards outlined above.
Applications (due March 1 annually) are available in the Honors House Office, and at http://honors.illinois.edu/CHP%20Awards.shtml. A selection committee reviews the proposals and makes awards according to the quality of the proposals submitted and the funds available. The awards are usually announced shortly after Spring Break. At the end of the summer, each recipient must submit a brief report on the work accomplished during the award period. Students may receive only one CHP research or travel grant per year, though they may apply for and be awarded grants (in either category) in subsequent years.
