The Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) Rail Safety and Risk Group is looking for two to three hourly-paid undergraduate research assistants in Railroad Safety and Data Analysis, who excel in programming (Python, R, Matlab, VBA, SQL), ArcGIS, machine learning techniques, and statistics skills to assist in various railroad safety, risk, and data analyses projects. The role of the research assistants include basic data organization, database construction and cleaning, statistical analysis, implementation of machine learning packages, and risk assessment of railroad safety data. Students will begin with simple data processing tasks, and after accumulating domain knowledge in railroad transportation, more technical statistical and risk analyses will follow.
Students will be involved in both research and practical projects from the rail industry. Students will learn engineering and risk management knowledge in railroad transportation and gain experiences in conducting risk analysis and collaborative research projects. This is a position that will continue as long as the student is studying at the university, as the RailTEC has been continuously taking on projects and thus will always need help from talented students.
If you are interested in the position, please submit your latest resume to Dr. Chen-Yu Lin (clin69@illilnois.edu). Interviews will be conducted for selected candidates for further evaluation. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!
