Positions will be available for up to 12 technicians creating 3 separate crews. Incumbents will be performing aquatic or terrestrial surveys, dependent upon their assigned crew, across the state, specifically related to native Kansas fauna. Crews have the potential to conduct the following activities: (1) surveying for native mussels in their historical range throughout Kansas (2) assessment of threatened and endangered aquatic species statewide; (3) surveying for state threatened species of reptiles and amphibians in appropriate habitats; (4) survey bats and small mammal communities using appropriate methods and procedures (5) conduct standardized aquatic surveys of fish and macroinvertebrate communities in public and/or private areas. Some lab work involving the identification, sorting, and cataloging of collected specimens obtained from surveys may be required. Assist with conducting educational events for students of various ages. Maintaining good working relationships with other institutions and personnel will be required. Perform other duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to perform demanding tasks in a variety of outdoor settings and weather conditions. Must be able to think and work independently and follow daily assigned tasks as well as be a part of a crew. Must be able to travel weekly in state provided vehicles to survey locations statewide and stay overnight in provided hotels. Ability to work in harsh field conditions, including mud, 100+ degree temperatures, poisonous plants, tolerating insects, and handling live organisms including fish, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, and insects is required. Required to be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license. Due to the nature of the work being performed, applicants who can work the full summer schedule and minimize absences will be given higher preference.
BENEFITS: Hourly wage: $13.00 per hour. A meal allowance of up to $59.00 per day as well as coverage for lodging expenses for overnight work-related travel will be provided. The department does not provide housing outside of work-related travel. Schedules will vary according to the type of work being performed and may include some weekend hours. Work weeks are typically 40 hours; No paid holidays. Technicians can work up to but not exceed 999 hours per calendar year; Total hours worked will be dependent upon work needs for the Ecological Services Division. Depending on the time of year technicians may be asked to work limited days to save hours for more busy time periods.
