Primary Responsibilities
- Habitat restoration and enhancement tasks including native seed harvest, brush removal (utilizing chainsaws, mowers, brush cutters, etc.), prescribed burns, invasive species management, and heavy equipment operation.
- Restoration assessment and planning including GIS data management.
- Species inventories, plant identification, site mapping, and data collection contributing to the preparation of written summaries, charts, and infographics detailing species populations.
- Routine maintenance and repair of equipment, vehicles, and tools.
- Operation of vehicles of various sizes (truck, tractor, skid steer) during restoration tasks and transportation between sites.
- Assist Operations staff with maintenance and upkeep of department buildings.
- Represents a positive and professional image to the public.
- Provides input during the budget preparation process.
- Maintains required logs and work lists, provides progress reports, etc.
- Assist with township events, volunteer workdays, and outreach programs including planning, set up/tear down, and participation.
- Performs work assignments safely and in compliance with township policies and OSHA work safety rules.
- Reports to township Ecologist.
- Additional duties as assigned to support the Campton Township Parks and Open Space mission.
Required Qualifications
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
- Applicant must have a current and valid driver’s license that is free from suspension or revocation during term of employment. Must maintain insurability with Campton Township’s fleet carrier.
- Interest in habitat conservation and community engagement.
- Enthusiastic, courteous, and positive attitude.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (including exposure to allergens, heat/cold, humidity, snow/ice, biting insects, and hazardous plants) for extended periods of time utilizing power equipment and personal protective equipment.
- Must obtain/complete within 6 months of employment:
o Certified in CPR/AED/First Aid.
o Illinois Pesticide Applicator license (Commercial Not-for-Hire: Right-of-Way).
o OSHA 10-hour Training.
Suggested Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, wildlife ecology, biology, forestry, or closely allied field.
- Knowledge of Illinois natural resources and history. Familiarity with regional prairie, woodland, and wetland communities.
- Experience with gas-powered tools including chainsaws, brush saws, and brush mowers.
- Experience with large equipment including tractors and skid steers.
- Illinois Pesticide Applicator license (Commercial Not-for-Hire: Right-of-Way).
- Illinois Prescribed Burn Manager certification.
Schedule and Salary
- Full-time (40 hours/week). Standard schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm.
- Schedule may vary to accommodate program needs including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Starting salary: $20 per hour. Eligible for comp/overtime.
