To support our mission, we are seeking a Beaver Conflict Reduction and Outreach Specialist to join our Wildlife Team in Wyoming. The WY Beaver Conflict Reduction and Outreach Specialist is a seasonal term assignment based in Northwest Wyoming. As part of a small, high-impact team, this position will work under the guidance of the Defenders of Wildlife, the National Wildlife Federation, and Wyoming Untrapped.
The WY Beaver Conflict Reduction and Outreach Specialist will be hired as a term employee under the National Wildlife Federation and, as such, will submit invoices and expenses through NWF. The cost-share will be handled by Wyoming Untrapped, and all material costs incurred by landowners will be documented and submitted to Wyoming Untrapped. The initial term is up to 5 months (June/July to October/November) at 32 hours per week, up to 640 total hours. If additional funding is secured, there is a strong possibility to extend this term or expand the scope of work.
This work will include community outreach and education, hosting training events for local partners, and constructing targeted low-tech demonstration projects. This work requires specialized knowledge and skills in wildlife conflict resolution, and in techniques for non-lethal beaver management, as well as in building good relationships, credibility, and trust with key agency partners like WGFD, WYDOT, USFS; landowners; and non-profit organizations.
Principle Duties (major areas of responsibility):
- Assess the beaver nuisance problem in Northwest Wyoming - scale, characteristics, seasonality, current practices, etc.
- Plan and build demonstration projects for non-lethal beaver nuisance management on properties that can be easily visited on tours or other outreach events.
- Organize a least two training courses for partners and agencies, focusing on assessing beaver conflicts and non-lethal methods to solve beaver nuisance problems.
- Develop a cost-share program for beaver conflict mitigation work.
- Submit monthly and annual status reports to partners and granting agencies.
- Submit expense reports and invoices on the first of each month.
- Purchase and maintain equipment and supplies as outlined in the work plan. Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested with a sense of team-oriented and collaborative mindset.
- Project commitment to and professional enthusiasm about the collaborative nature of work to protect
- Coordinate monthly update calls with the National Wildlife Federation, Wyoming Untrapped, Defenders of Wildlife, and other partners as appropriate to report on current projects and support needs.
Qualifications:
- The WY Beaver Conflict Reduction and Outreach Specialist will have excellent people skills, be well-organized, be a practical and independent problem-solver, be handy and comfortable with light construction projects, have basic computer skills, have experience in wildlife or natural resource management, and possesses an understanding of stream/wetland restoration practices.
- A bachelor’s degree in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field is preferred.
Physical Qualifications:
This is a field position requiring physical exertion (able to lift 40 pounds), efficient navigation in remote rural areas, and often eight or more hours in the field each day, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.

Travel Requirements:
This position requires travel, including overnight trips, and some evenings and weekends. Successful candidates must use their own vehicle for fieldwork (compensated at Federal travel rate per mile), work safely and independently in remote locations around Northwest Wyoming, and demonstrate self-discipline and accountability for managing their field and home office workload efficiently.

This position will be based in Cody, Lander, or Jackson, Wyoming. Compensation and Benefits:
The pay rate for this position is $30-$35 per hour, commensurate with experience.
