Wildlife Intern working in the Environmental Stewardship Section of the Willamette Valley Project (WVP) for the Army Corps of Engineers. WVP is a major water resource project responsible for operating 13 dams and managing natural resources and recreation in the lakes and surrounding lands. We manage nearly 50,000 acres in the Willamette, McKenzie, and Santiam watersheds. The Environmental Stewardship section is known for our community partnerships in natural resource preservation and restoration.
The intern will assist with monitoring and trapping sensitive wildlife species including the Northwestern pond turtle, Western purple martin, bald eagle, and other species as needed. The primary responsibilities will be turtle nest searching, capture of non-native turtles, collecting GPS and morphometric data, and data entry. Work is focused around lakes in the southern Willamette Valley. Additional duties may include field support of other natural resource programs such as native plant surveys, invasive plant removal, assisting with plant nursery operations, cultural resources monitoring, boundary surveys, or park operations.
*TENTATIVE* Compensation amounts:
- $260 - weekly living allowance
- $40 weekly commuting allowance
- $950 - monthly housing allowance (6 months of housing)
- $2,000 duty travel reimbursement + $650* reimburseable (to/from site)
- AmeriCorps eligible ($3,172 education award for at least 900 service hours)
*Internship positions with the US Army Corps of Engineers will receive the travel allowance as a reimbursable amount, reflecting the actual costs based upon distance (mileage) travelled and current federal per diem rates. Interns are required to submit an expense report to SCA with documented round-trip travel costs for reimbursement. The requested reimbursement amount is capped at $650.

Office is located on the north side of Fern Ridge Reservoir, about 13 miles west of Eugene, OR. Mailing address is 26275 Clear Lake Rd, Junction City, OR 97448. Field work is concentrated at 5 of 13 lakes in the Willamette Valley, but day travel to all lakes may be possible.
Intern may take online ESRI ArcGIS training, attend local workshops, or other online classes or off-site training.
First Aid and CPR training can be provided. Additional on-the-job training in natural/cultural resources field monitoring methods.
There are numerous recreational opportunities in the area including hiking, camping, bicycling, boating, fishing and rafting. Just over a one-hr drive to either the Cascade Mountains or the Pacific Coast.
