Job Summary:
This position will provide technical assistance to industrial and municipal facilities, responsible parties and individuals to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. You will investigate environmental problem areas, conduct environmental inspections, and respond to environmental complaints. In addition, you will analyze environmental data to determine validity, quality, and scientific significance and interpret correlations between data, human activities and environmental effects. Eighty percent of the work will involve assessing permit compliance through inspections, issuing reports and requesting compliance documentation, and participating in problem solving.
In addition to the duties of an Inspector, as an Environmental Science Specialist, you will conduct research or perform investigation for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazards that affect either the environment or the health of the population. Using knowledge of various scientific disciplines, you may collect, synthesize, study, report, and recommend action based on data derived from measurement or observations of air, soil, water, and other sources.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
• Knowledge of State and Federal environmental regulations, environmental sciences and research, sources of pollution, best practices for preventing the release of pollutants, environmental research, investigation techniques and statistical analysis, Agency policies and processes
• Ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks; to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication
Selective Preference(s):
• Bachelor’s degree in hydrology, geology, environmental management/science or sustainability
• Level 1: Requires 0-2 years’ experience
• Level 2: Requires 2 years’ experience
