Description of Work Unit: CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary: A Fisheries Biologist position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands to be located at Fort McCoy, WI. This position supports all aspects of stream (cold water and warm water) and lake management including stream improvement, fish sampling, creel surveys, stocking, aquatic plant management, and water quality monitoring and contributing to annual reporting. Position will require occasional weekend and evening work time. Position will engage with lead fisheries biologist, lead seasonal staff and engage with the general public. This position requires ability to traverse difficult terrain and work outdoors in weather extremes.
Required Job Qualifications:
- The successful candidate must have BS/BA degree in fisheries, aquatic biology, or closely related field and at least two seasons professional experience in fisheries management.
- Knowledge of fish species of the upper Midwest is required.
- The successful candidate must have experience in fisheries management (fish sampling, creel surveys, stocking, and habitat improvement) and water quality monitoring.
- Experience in data management, analysis and entry on desktop computers is a must.
- The successful candidate will have experience in operating and maintaining electroshocking equipment, GPS receivers, and laboratory equipment.
- Currently have or willing to get SCUBA certified.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are also required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
- The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Supervisory experience with seasonal crews.
- Experience interpreting and communicating fisheries regulations for the public.
- Experience designing studies and writing proposals.
- Experience determining impacts of habitat manipulation (including construction activities) on watershed resources.
- SCUBA certification

Essential Duties
Job Duty Category: Natural Resources Management
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of stream (cold water and warm water) and lake management including stream improvement, fish sampling, creel surveys, stocking, aquatic plant management, and water quality monitoring.
- Educate the public on fisheries management and fishing regulations, which will require occasional evening and weekend work hours.
- Design and implement studies and proposals.
- Contribute to and coordinate on interagency projects such as United States Geological Survey (USGS) watershed studies, WI Department of Natural Resources fish removal projects, United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) fish health assessments, and USFWS brood stock collection and fish stocking.
- Review construction plans to ensure best management practices are used, and conduct site visits during and after the construction process to determine impacts to the surrounding watersheds.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Use complex mathematical and statistical equations to analyze data and write reports on present and historical datasets.
- Use GIS software to determine watershed areas, lake and pond volumes and create maps for use in reports and proposals.
- Design data spreadsheets to include writing code to enable faster and easier data analysis.
- Develop models and indexes of stream ecology using complex scientific data reductions.
- Use judgment in determining procedures for laboratory and field sampling to ensure the accuracy and quality of collected results.
- Analyze data to determine and recommend changes to the Fort McCoy Fishing Regulations to create a healthy and sustainable fish population.
- Create and manage databases, conduct analyses and compile reports using desktop computers

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Supervise and assign daily tasks to seasonal employees
- Obtain required equipment, soliciting price quotes from vendors to determine optimum purchases
- Coordinate with local schools and host student work days where students visit Fort McCoy and attend a half day presentation on steam ecology. Review and recommend changes to Fort McCoy’s Integrate Natural Resource Management Plan
