1) Silver Carp Movement and Habitat Use via Acoustic Telemetry in the Wabash River Basin
2) Channel Catfish Reproduction and Recruitment in East-Central, IL Reservoirs
Description: Two graduate research assistantships are available in the Department of Biological Sciences’ Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at Eastern Illinois University starting in May 2022. One project will investigate Silver Carp Movement and Habitat use in the Wabash River Basin (main-stem Wabash and White Rivers) using acoustic telemetry (active tracking). Goals of this project are to identify seasonal and diurnal movement patterns of Silver Carp in the basin to inform current control efforts (i.e., contracted harvest). The second position will focus on Channel Catfish reproduction and recruitment in East Central, IL reservoirs. Goals of this second position are to quantify the rate of reproduction and recruitment in the study reservoirs, and identify methods to supplement reproduction where natural reproduction may be lacking, through the use of artificial spawning structures.
The positions come with tuition waivers and $1400/month stipends under a 12-month contract. We are in search of self-motivated students that work well independently and in a team setting. The candidates will assist with both field and laboratory sampling and data processing tasks. Knowledge of fisheries, field/lab techniques, and boat operation are preferred. A bachelor’s degree, a GRE score of 309, and an undergraduate GPA of 3.3 are required. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and work in inclement weather conditions. Must have a valid driver’s license with at least 4 years of driving experience. Review of applications will begin December 6th and will continue until positions are filled. Please send a statement of interest, a CV (including undergraduate GPA and GRE scores), and a list of three professional references to:
