The Northern Region will soon be filling a position as Regional Archeologist, GS-0193-13. The duty station is the Northern Region Headquarters in Missoula, MT.
About this Position
This position serves as the Federal Preservation Officer and Heritage Program Leader within the Recreation, Minerals, Lands, Heritage and Wilderness staff group of the Regional Office. Incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, administering, directing and managing heritage and cultural resource program activities for the region.
Duties of the position include:
- Develop regional policies, procedures, goals, objectives, targets and priorities for the heritage program.
- Providing expert technical support and authoritative advice to the Director, Regional Forester, Forest Supervisors, District Rangers and others regarding laws, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to heritage and cultural resources.
- Ensures regional compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, National Environmental Policy Act and various other laws, regulations, executive orders, federal and state guidelines, and agency policy at they relate to heritage and cultural program activities.
- Provides regional program leadership in managing highly complex and diverse historic properties of national, state, regional and local significance
- Coordinates, consults and negotiates with tribes, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, BLM, NPS, National Register of Historic Places, Office of Historic Preservation and other governmental agencies regarding heritage and cultural resources and associated activities.
- Represents the agency and region at scientific and professional society organizations and at professional meetings and conferences.
