Seasonal Position- Avian and Insect Technician (1)
Description: I am looking for one (1) responsible, organized, motivated, and detail-oriented field technician with a strong work-ethic to help assist with a masters research project studying avian and insect diversity within an agricultural landscape in central Illinois.
The position will start May 18st and go mid/late July, but start and end dates are flexible. Salary is $10/hour on a 40 hour work week. Housing will not be provided, but we can help find housing. Field sites are primarily located in McLean, Livingston, Logan, and Champaign counties. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be able to work independently, endure field conditions (e.g. heat, bugs, and early mornings), and be flexible with their work schedule.
Responsibilities: Field technician will assist with bird point counts, butterfly walking transects, and setting up/collecting insect traps in agricultural fields. Applicants must be able to get up early in the morning to conduct bird point counts (in field ready to go by 5am). Opportunities to learn insect identification skills will be available. Technician will also be responsible for data entry in Excel.
Applicants must be able to identify songbirds by sight and sound and be able to identify butterflies in flight (though training will be provided). Applicants with previous experience will be given preference, however individuals who learn bird and butterfly identification quickly and are passionate about agricultural conservation issues are encouraged to apply.
