Description:
Multiple Summer Field Assistant Positions Available. This position involves full-time work (40 hours/week) on projects related to the ecology, behavior, and management of corn insect pests (western corn rootworm beetles and larvae) in transgenic corn and other crops. The position involves 1) near daily outdoor field research and laboratory work (e.g. in-field insect collection, sorting, and/or use of dissecting microscope), 2) field, greenhouse and laboratory care/handling of western corn rootworm beetles and other insects harmless to humans, 3) local travel to cornfield and prairie field sites in UI fleet vehicles, 4) climbing sturdy scaffolding 30 feet to collect flying insects—after safety training, 5) 2-2.5 hours of evening work 1-2-days per week (afternoon hours reduced on these days). Some weekend work is possible. Job location is at the Forbes Natural History Building, 1816 S. Oak St. in the UI South Research Park – near State Farm Center. Served by Brown, Yellow and Gold bus routes.
Required:
Valid Driver's License, ability to work out-of-doors, punctual habits, availability to work throughout the entire summer, no allergy to corn, no fear of heights or climbing, must enjoy working as part of a busy team. Must be available M-F and be able to shift some work hours to M-Th evenings (6-8 pm) 3-days per week. Positions to begin on June 2, 2016 and continue through ca. August 19, 2016 and perhaps beyond. Preferred:
Familiarity with field crops/farming as well as interest in insect ecology and behavior are pluses but not required. Curiosity, organization and thoughtfulness are desirable.
