Freshwater mussels are considered one of the most imperiled groups of animals on Earth! The Sangamon River running through Allerton Park has a high diversity of mussel species; 17 species have been documented alive in the park since 2007. Bring an old pair of tennis shoes and a change of clothes and help Allerton staff and local biologists survey the Sangamon for mussel diversity. Surveys are conducted by hand in the river, but if you don’t want to get wet bring a cup of coffee and watch from the bank. Registration is suggested. Meet at the Centaur Statue Parking Lot at 9am. Free
