Job Overview
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Land (BOL), Deputy Bureau Chief’s Office Section, Office of Site Evaluation unit is seeking to hire Life Science Career Trainee (Option E). The ideal candidate will participate in the agency sponsored training program for a six to twelve months duration. This trainee position receives working assignments designed to develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills consonant with various professional life sciences career disciplines within the Office of Site Evaluation Unit. As a LSCT, you will receive controlled assignments in a broad range of departmental activities with increasing difficulty and responsibility.

Job Responsibilities
45% 1. Receives training for a period of six to twelve months duration to gain knowledge in preparing the initial draft and technical reports for Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Brownfield, and other regulated facilities in accordance with established guidance and procedures in the Office of Site Evaluation Unit (OSE), Deputy Bureau Chief’s Office, for the Bureau of Land

- Utilizes personal computer to access databases and prepare documents/reports
- Compile and interpret field and laboratory data in accordance with the Hazard Ranking System and state and federal corrective action objectives
- Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze spatial relationships of site features and surroundings and display graphically
- Conducts background research using electronic records and external sources necessary to develop site history and conceptual model
20% 2. Receives training on how to prepare plans necessary to conduct technical and scientific field inspections/investigations to evaluate environmental contaminants and their impact on human health and the environment;

- Accesses databases to prepare plans in accordance with established guidance and procedures
- Conducts background research on facility using electronic records and external sources necessary to develop site operational history and initial conceptual model
- Identifies health and safety requirements and designs work in a manner necessary to comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.
- Evaluates data needs and quality objectives
- Identifies and secures equipment, laboratory space, supplies, and personnel resources necessary to complete inspection/investigation
20% 3. Receives training necessary to conduct environmental technical and scientific field inspections/investigations at sites where the presence of hazardous substances is either possible, suspected, or known;

- Performs site investigations in accordance with established plans, guidance, and procedures
- Involved in or assists others in the collection of air, surface water, groundwater, soil, soil gas, or waste samples through traditional means
- Utilizes a variety of field-based site characterization technologies
- Conducts activities that utilize safety equipment and performs rigorous physical activity to meet safety standards to comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.
- Prepares, lifts, and transports heavy equipment and environmental samples weighing up to 50 pounds
- Travels in performance of duties
10% 4. Receives training necessary to provide site evaluation expertise and technical assistance to cleanup programs within the Bureau of Land;

- Assists with site evaluation and technical assistance to cleanup programs with the BOL
- Attends and participates in staff meetings program training, conferences, and workshops
05% 5. Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor's degree in some field of the life sciences.
- This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title

Conditions of Employment

5. Requires ability to pass a physical examination, which is intended to determine whether a person can wear respiratory protection and function in high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing.
6. Requires the ability to wear an air purifying respirator and/or other forms of respiratory protection for long period of time (e.g. 10 hours with only short 15-minute breaks).
7. Requires the ability to carry and utilize a self-contained breathing apparatus (weighing approximately 25 pounds).
8. Requires the ability to wear chemical resistant clothing in high heat stress situations while performing strenuous physical tasks (e.g. carrying equipment up a steep ravine at a temperature of 100F).
9. Requires ability to lift heavy equipment/supplies (e.g. 50 pounds).
10. Requires ability of hiking, climbing, wading in streams or getting in/out of boats or swimming in emergency situations to get to sites (as required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120).
11. Requires sufficient dexterity to operate scientific sampling equipment.
12. As required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120, this position will be required to take (within 90 days of employment) and maintain working knowledge of (8 hr. annual refresher) and/or certification to ensure position is up to date with laws, rules and regulations to maintain compliance with IL Department of Labor Occupational Safety Regulations: 40 hour OSHA HAZWOPER training.
13. Requires ability to pass a name-based background check.
